Awards, Quality & Accreditation

Award-winning excellence! SMHC physicians and staff provide care that is among the nation's best. Accreditation is a distinction given to SMHC when its performance meets or exceeds standards and quality expectations.

Best in the Nation Nursing Care
In 2012 SMHC was the first community hospital in Maine and, at the time, one of 93 hospitals in the nation to earn the Pathway to Excellence designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. This award signifies that patients receive the very best nursing care at SMHC.

Cancer Care Program
In 2013 SMHC's Cancer Care Program received 'Accreditation with Commendation' from the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer (AcoS, CoC). The highest level awarded.

Center for Breast Care
In 2013 SMHC's Center for Breast Care received accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

In 2012 the American College of Radiology (ACR) designated the Center for Breast Care a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, only five months after opening.

Center for Sleep Disorders
In 2013 SMHC's Center for Sleep Disorders received accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) for providing high quality patient-centered care through advocacy, education, strategic research, and practice standards.

Joint Commission
SMHC is Joint Commission accredited and in 2013 was named a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® by The Joint Commission for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care.

Joint Replacement Program
In 2013 SMHC received accreditation from the Joint Commission for it's Joint Replacement Program, providing thousands of patients in York County with high quality orthopedic surgical care.

NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH)
In 2013 SMHC Physician's Internal Medicine practice in Biddeford received Level III recognition from NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home, a model of care that emphasizes care coordination and communication to transform primary care into “what patients want it to be.” Eligible SMHC Physician practices have also received PCMH Level 1 recognition.
