Diabetes Program

Diabetes programs, five-part series certified by the American Diabetes Association, provide participants with invaluable information and education about basic diabetes care and serve as the foundation for lifelong management of the disease.

There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2.

  • Type 1 Diabetes results from the body's failure to produce insulin.
  • Type 2 Diabetes, the most common type, results from insulin resistance (when the body fails to properly use insulin).

With the proper education and management, both types of diabetes can be controlled. SMHC's program 'Outsmarting Diabetes' is offered in Sanford and 'Taking Control' is offered by HomeHealth Visiting Nurses in Biddeford.

A doctor's referral is required for the class.  To learn more, please call (207) 490-7397 (SMHC - Sanford) or 1-800-660-4867 (HomeHealth Visiting Nurses).
