We have provided long-term care and medical services to senior citizens since 1967, when we were the first in the state to do so. Currently, SMHC operates four eldercare facilities in Sanford, Maine that include:
The Newton Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Care
The Newton Center is a 74-bed licensed skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility certified by both Medicare and Medicaid (MaineCare). Dedicated staff provide high quality care to residents and our programs foster family and community involvement and education, and stress care, compassion, respect, and dignity. Services include: physical, occupational and speech therapy; wound care; skilled nursing care; IV therapy; discharge planning; and 24-hour nursing. In addition we have a very enthusiastic Activities department that plans not only daily activities but day trips as well!

This facility offers seniors with limited incomes access to assisted living services. It includes apartment-like-living, a full range of activities, and common living and dining accommodations. Meals are provided three times per day, seven days per week in the beautiful dining room. The Mayflower Place is owned by the Sanford Housing Authority and staffed by Southern Maine Health Care. The Pavilion is a specialized residence for people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. Residents and their families receive high quality care and are offered a diverse range of therapeutic activities including weekly spiritual services and bi-monthly outings. The 24-bed facility is a secured (locked), memory impairment unit with cottage-style living areas. A home-like kitchen and lovely secured outdoor living area with paths and gardens make the residents feel right at home!
