Our commitment to our patients and our community is to deliver the very best evidence-based patient centered care with compassion and respect. We are dedicated to creating a practice environment that supports and encourages professional growth and values teamwork and communication.

Our Vision and Philosophy

SMHC Nursing Mission
Commitment to nursing excellence through compassionate care and professional partnerships.

SMHC Nursing Vision
To create and foster an environment that promotes healing of the body, mind and spirit through clinical and relationship excellence which will inspire nurses to embrace their passion for professional integrity, caring relationships, lifelong learning, sharing and optimal contribution.

SMHC Philosophy
We believe that the patient is the central focus of nursing care and practice. Therefore, the primary effort of nursing is directed toward meeting the patient’s individual physical, emotional and spiritual needs and expectations within a healing and caring environment.

We believe that all patients and their families are entitled to our commitment to the “welcome, listen and serve” philosophy and that nursing should always respect the individual rights, cultural values and unique differences of all patients who seek our care.

We believe that patients and families have the right and responsibility to be involved in patient care decisions and the right to be kept informed about their progress along the continuum.

We believe that nursing is accountable for its practice in accordance with recognized professional standards and ethical codes. We believe that the application of evidence based practice results in optimal patient outcomes. We remain ever observant for opportunities to improve and strengthen the patient care delivery system and base those changes on the latest research findings and measurable quality improvement data.

We believe it is the responsibility of the professional nurse to effectively and efficiently utilize all human and material resources provided in the delivery of care.

We believe that nursing requires a commitment to continued professional growth through a process of lifelong learning and that this commitment is essential to the delivery of quality patient care and the advancement of the nursing profession.

We believe that patient care is enhanced through the development of partnerships with patients, families, peers, caregivers and the community.  We support open and respectful communication in an effort to foster ongoing cooperative and collaborative relationships. We accept the challenge of providing high quality nursing care as a member of the total health care team in a complex and dynamic health care environment.

We believe in an environment that continually seeks to improve the delivery of patient care, facilitates rapid changes in practice, and encourages flexibility throughout all levels of care providers. We believe in the concept of shared governance whereby staff participates in decisions affecting nursing practice and the clinical work environment. We believe in the enhancement of an environment that provides recognition of nursing staff for excellence in clinical practice and promotes the recruitment and retention of clinically competent staff.
