Lymphedema Program

Lymphedema is defined as an accumulation of protein-rich fluid that often causes acute swelling in the arms or legs. SMHC's Program is maintained by a licensed physical therapist who has specialized training and experience in lymphedema management.

What to watch for:

  • Swelling on the affected side following mastectomy or prostatectomy
  • Feeling of pressure, heaviness or tightness
  • A sensation of fullness or swelling, which can be present before swelling is visible
  • "Pins and needles" sensation
  • Redness and inflammation

Treatment - Combined Decongestive Therapy consists of:

  • Good hygiene/skin care
  • Manual lymph drainage - a massage technique
  • Compression bandaging
  • Exercise and nutritional support
  • Compression garments
  • Self-care management
  • Post-op patient education

Outcomes have been positive for our patients, with reduction in limb girth, improved wound healing, increased range of motion and improved functional status.

A physician's referral is required for treatment. For more information, please call Rehabilitation Services at (207) 283-7980.
