Swallowing Disorders (Vital Stimulation Therapy)

New Swallowing Therapy Offered - Vitalstim®Therapy
More than 98% patients participating in clinical trials around the country improved their swallow function score. Forty percent of patients who were tube feed dependent regained swallowing function to eat again. This therapy has proven to be twice as effective as traditional dysphagia therapy interventions.

Dysphagia, or impaired swallowing affects an estimated 15 million people. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and can cause patients to lose their abilty to eat or drink. It can occur as the result of a stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s or other neurological conditions. It is estimated that nearly half of all patients in skilled nursing homes are impacted by this condition.

Vital®Stim Therapy is an FDA approved Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation therapy performed by a specially certified Speech Language Pathologist. During treatment, a carefully calibrated electrical current is delivered by electrodes to muscles that control swallowing. The current stimulates the nerves and causes muscle contractions. This improves swallow function over a course of treatments.

A physician’s referral is required for treatment. If you have any questions, please call Rehabilitation Services in Kennebunk at (207) 467-6999.
