Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) exists to improve the health and health care of the communities we serve. The following health education programs will be offered by SMHC during the month of February:
 

CANCER CARE

Look Good, Feel Better Program
Monday, February 24, 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Location: SMHC, 1 Medical Center Drive, Biddeford
Free program offered by the SMHC Cancer Care Program and the American Cancer Society, designed to lift the spirits of women who are experiencing the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatments. Pre-registration required, please call 283-7320.

Macrobiotics Natural Foods Cooking Class
Fourth Saturday of the month (February 22), 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Location: Sweetser, 50 Moody Street, Saco
Macrobiotics is a natural approach to health and sickness. A macrobiotic diet consists of whole foods and cooking techniques brimming with health giving qualities. Should you be facing a serious illness or simply looking for better health, we encourage you to explore the possibilities. Presented by Macrobiotic Master Chef Connie Arnold. CHILDBIRTH EDUCATION

Breastfeeding Class
February 25, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Location: SMHC, 1 Medical Center Drive, Biddeford
Free
This class, presented by one of SMHC’s board certified lactation consultants, will cover how to breastfeed your baby, what's normal, and where to get help if needed.

Maine Child Passenger Safety Seat Program
SMHC is a Maine Voucher Site, providing income-eligible families with free car seats, in addition to instruction on proper car seat use and installation. For more information, please call SMHC's certified passenger safety technician at 283-7352.

Safe Baby - Infant Safety & Infant/Toddler CPR 
February 27, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Location: SMHC, 1 Medical Center Drive, Biddeford
Cost: $25/couple; $15/person
This class provides a non-certificate course by the American Heart Association to family and friends, as well as basic home safety for your baby as they grow.

Big Brother/Big Sister School
February 18, 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Location: SMHC, 1 Medical Center Drive, Biddeford
Free
Introduce your children, age three to six years old, to their new role as a sibling to a newborn. They’ll visit our birthing suite, watch a video, and talk about becoming big brothers or sisters. Please bring a stuffed animal or doll for holding and diapering. Pre-registration required, please call 283-7350.

The “Grand” Parent
February 6, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Location: SMHC, 1 Medical Center Drive, Biddeford

A class for grandparents-to-be.  Grandma/Grandpa, Nana/Pop, Memere/Pepere, what’s your name going to be?  Information to prepare you for your baby’s baby.  So many changes and so many choices.  Come join us to learn basic infant CPR, car seat safety and review new information since your child was a newborn.  Pre-registration is required, please call 283-7350.

Heartsaver CPR

Total Joint Replacement Education Class
This free educational session is designed for those considering total joint replacement. Participants will learn what to expect before, during and after their procedure and stay in the hospital. Open to anyone interested.

Weight Loss Surgery Information Session
Is weight loss surgery the right decision for you? Have you tried the other weight loss methods and nothing seems to work? If you're considering weight loss surgery, then this introductory class is for you. Be Tobacco Free

Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) offers a “Be Tobacco Free” program involving a comprehensive 4-week course designed to offer the tobacco user with all the information and tools required to become tobacco free. The Certified Tobacco Treatments Specialists will offer insights into smoking habits, stress and the relationship it has to smoking, as well as nicotine replacement options available. On­going support is also valuable in guiding the tobacco user to become tobacco free. Pre-registration is preferred, please call 283-7988.

Outsmarting Diabetes
February 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 6:00 p.m.

Better Breathers Club (Pulmonary Rehabilitation)
Second Wednesday of each month (February 12), 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Open to anyone interested in learning more about pulmonary disease and improving their quality of life. Small group sessions allow participants to share experiences and learn in a comfortable and caring environment. For more information, please call 283-7773.

Diabetes Support Group – The Beat Goes On

Mom's Circle Support Group
February 5, 12, 19, 26, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

SMHC’s Birthing Suite hosts a weekly Moms Circle, facilitated by Katherine O'Connor, RN, IBCLC. This group allows mothers to meet for support, play dates, friendship and fun! The group provides mothers with the opportunity to share ideas, vent frustration and compare notes. In this group mothers share their experiences to help other new moms and discuss the normal, and not-so-normal, emotions during their postpartum journey. Young Widow & Widowers Support Group
