Corning Incorporated Foundation Awards Grant to SMMC

07/23/2013

For the second consecutive year, the Corning Foundation has provided SMHC with a grant to support their cancer care programs.  SMHC recently received their donation to expand the nurse navigator position to all cancer patients. The Foundation awards grants in support of projects that are consistent with their commitment to improving the quality of life in and around communities where Corning has an active presence.

In accepting the gift, Steve Keegan, Vice President of Ancillary Services commented, "We deeply appreciate the Foundation's continued generosity. They helped to support our Center for Breast Care last year and this year they continue to show their support of the hundreds of cancer patients in our community."

In 2011, there were 250 SMHC patients diagnosed with other invasive cancers besides breast cancer, primarily lung, bladder, colon, and prostate.  In keeping with SMHC’s mission of providing excellent healthcare, it is imperative that all cancer patients have access to an oncology nurse navigator.  Thanks to Corning Incorporated Foundation, along with support from the Sam L. Cohen Foundation, JTG Foundation and Elmina B. Sewall Foundation, SMHC is now able to provide this service to all cancer patients.
