First Lady Michelle Obama Serving as Honorary Chair of the Three-year Program
Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) and Goodall Hospital have joined other MaineHealth members and signed on to participate in a new national initiative to provide healthier options in their hospital cafeterias. The Partnership for a Healthier America’s (PHA) “Hospital Healthy Food Initiative” includes 155 hospitals across the country, making it the most expansive effort to impact hospital food and nutrition to date. First Lady Michelle Obama is serving as honorary chair for the three-year program.
“SMMC and Goodall Hospital are pleased to join other MaineHealth members in the Partnership for a Healthier America initiative,” said SMHC President and CEO Ed McGeachey. “We are committed to improving the health of our communities and that includes setting a positive example by serving nutritious foods that promote good health and healing.”
“We firmly believe that participating in the ‘Hospital Healthy Food Initiative’ will allow Goodall and SMHC to better fulfill our main goal of providing patients with the best care possible, while also promoting health throughout the communities we serve,” added Goodall President and CEO Patsy Aprile.
As part of the PHA initiative, participating hospitals are adopting standards in the following categories:
“Over the last few years, Goodall and SMHC have implemented changes to ensure that our patients, visitors and employees have a wide variety of affordable and healthy food options,” said Mike Sabo, director of hospitality services for the two organizations. “Joining the PHA’s ‘Hospital Healthy Food Initiative’ was a natural progression of the work already underway to make the healthy choice the easy choice.”
In addition to his responsibilities at SMHC and Goodall, Sabo is chair of MaineHealth’s Food Service Director Task Force. He was recently named Food Service Director of the Year for 2013 at the 8th Annual Good to Best Conference held in San Diego, California; an annual meeting of healthcare food service directors, operators, executive chefs, and industry leaders.
