Goodall Hospital Joins MaineHealth Through New Partnership with Southern Maine Medical Center

Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) and Goodall Hospital have announced the formation of a new parent corporation, Southern Maine Medical Center (SMHC), which is now the York County member of MaineHealth.  SMHC and Goodall Hospital remain separate organizations at this time, each with their own operations and medical staff.  However, through their partnership within Southern Maine Health Care, both organizations and their medical staffs will begin working closely together to develop integrated services and operations which will enhance patient care, control the rising cost of healthcare, and improve the health of people in the communities they serve.

SMMC has been a member of MaineHealth since 2009, and Goodall Hospital recently received regulatory approval for membership.  This led the two organizations to consider how a closer affiliation might benefit their communities.

“Goodall Hospital is very excited to become a part of MaineHealth through this new partnership with SMHC and Southern Maine Health Care,” Patsy Aprile, president and CEO of Goodall Hospital stated.  “We see this as a major step forward for our community and our healthcare programs. Now we can collaborate to provide the best health care services for our patients.”

Ed McGeachey, president and CEO of SMHC and SMHC noted that, “Over 85 percent of U.S. hospitals today are part of networks.  By joining forces with other members of MaineHealth, SMHC has already been able to save millions of dollars through large group purchases of supplies and technology and shared resources and expertise.  We have also been able to bring valuable services to our community, such as MedAccess, which has helped local people save over $5 million in prescription drug costs.  These are the kind of benefits that one, independent health care organization does not have the ability to offer on its own.  Simply put, by working together as a member of MaineHealth, SMHC and Goodall will be able to do more for all our York County patients and be more cost efficient at the same time.  And that’s the goal as Southern Maine Health Care.”

The Southern Maine Medical Center board of trustees includes: Bernard Gaines, chairperson, of Saco; Ted Hissong, vice chairperson, of Kennebunk; Brad Paige, treasurer, of Kennebunk; Merilee Perkins, secretary, of Shapleigh; Robert Bauman of Kennebunk; Lori Ann Black of Springvale; Donald Burgess, MD, of Kennebunkport; Michael Carroll, MD, of Kennebunkport; Jennifer Cutts, MD, of York; Joan Fink of Old Orchard Beach; William Frank, MD, of Sanford; Frank Goudreau, DO, of East Waterboro; Richard Hull, III of Lyman; Mark Mickeriz of Wells; David Nickerson of Sanford; Mary O’Hare, MD, of Kennebunk; Robert Quentin of Saco; Gina Quinn-Skillings, MD, of North Yarmouth; Robert Reinken of North Berwick; and John Thompson, DO, of Kennebunkport.  Ed McGeachey, president and CEO of Southern Maine Medical Center and SMHC, and William Caron, president and CEO of MaineHealth, serve as ex-officio members of the board.

Southern Maine Medical Center was formed by the Goodall and SMHC boards with the intention that the two hospitals will merge in about a year.  During this next year, the organizations, their medical staff and the community will be engaged in a strategic planning process to determine local health care needs and how best to meet those needs as one organization.
