Health Education Programs for July 2014


BIDDEFORD, MAINE – July 8, 2014 - Southern Maine Health Care’s (SMHC) mission is to improve the health and health care of the communities we serve. We are pleased to offer the following health education programs during the month of July:


Healthy STEPPS

Come and rejuvenate your spirit! Presented by Elizabeth Carlson.

Second and fourth Monday of each month (July 14 and 28), 4:30 to 5:30 pm

Look Good, Feel Better Program

Offered by the SMHC Cancer Care Program and the American Cancer Society, Look Good, Feel Better is designed to lift the spirits of women who are experiencing the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatments.


Fourth Monday of each odd month (July 28), 2:00 to 4:00 pm

Macrobiotics Natural Foods Cooking Class

Macrobiotics is a natural approach to health and sickness. A macrobiotic diet consists of whole foods and cooking techniques brimming with health giving qualities. Should you be facing a serious illness or simply looking for better health, we encourage you to explore the possibilities. Presented by Macrobiotic Master Chef Connie Arnold.

Fourth Saturday of each month (July 26), 10:30 am to 12:30 pm

Childbirth Preparation Class (Lamaze)                         

This class will cover a variety of the birth information, as well as pain control, stages of labor, positions, breathing and much more. Let us help you become more informed so you can create realistic goals and expectations for your most perfect day. Expectant mothers should be in their last trimester.

Saturday, July 26, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Breastfeeding Class

SMHC’s board certified lactation consultant will cover how to breastfeed your baby, what's normal, and where to get help if needed.

Last Tuesday of each month (July 29), 6:00 to 8:00 pm

Safe Baby - Infant Safety & Infant/Toddler CPR 

This class provides a non-certificate course by the American Heart Association to family and friends, as well as basic home safety for your baby as they grow.

Last Thursday of each month (July 31), 6:00 to 8:30 pm

Heartsaver CPR

Course includes instruction, textbook and a two-year certification card from the American Heart Association.

Total Joint Replacement Education Class

Designed for those considering total joint replacement. Participants will learn what to expect before, during and after their procedure and stay in the hospital. Open to anyone interested.

Weight Loss Surgery Information Session

Is weight loss surgery the right decision for you? Have you tried the other weight loss methods and nothing seems to work? If you're considering weight loss surgery, then this introductory class is for you. Information will be presented about nutrition, resources, and other topics to help with the lifestyle and emotional adjustments you may face.

Biddeford Medical Center

Be Tobacco Free

SMHC’s “Be Tobacco Free” program is a comprehensive 4-week course designed to offer the tobacco user with all the information and tools required to become tobacco free. Our Certified Tobacco Treatments Specialists will offer insights into smoking habits, stress and the relationship it has to smoking, as well as nicotine replacement options available. On­going support is also valuable in guiding the tobacco user to become tobacco free.

Outsmarting Diabetes

This five-part series provides participants with invaluable information and education about basic diabetes care and is certified by the American Diabetes Association.

July 9, 14, 16, 21, 23, 2:00 to 4:00 pm

Living Well with Pre-Diabetes

Designed for individuals who have been diagnosed with one of the following: pre-diabetes, borderline diabetes, metabolic syndrome; and individuals who would like to learn tips and tools for a healthier lifestyle. Participants will learn about the diagnosis of pre-diabetes, discuss ways to reduce the risk of acquiring diabetes, create a meal plan with health, lifestyle, and personal goals in mind, learn what foods affect blood sugar levels, learn how to read food nutrition labels and develop a place for reasonable weight loss if appropriate.

Breast Cancer Survivors Support Group

Second and fourth Thursday of each month (July 24, second session canceled this month), 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm

Mom's Circle Support Group

SMHC’s Birthing Suite hosts a weekly Moms Circle, facilitated by Katherine O'Connor, RN, IBCLC. This group allows mothers to meet for support, play dates, friendship and fun! The group provides mothers with the opportunity to share ideas, vent frustration and compare notes. In this group mothers share their experiences to help other new moms and discuss the normal, and not-so-normal, emotions during their postpartum journey. Mom's Circle is free and babies are always welcome.

Every Wednesday, 10:00 to 11:00 am

Young Widow & Widowers Support Group

Hosted by Center for Grieving Children.

Second and fourth Friday of each month (July 11, 25), 6:30 to 8:00 pm

Healthy Hearts Support Group

The group covers cardiovascular diseases, atrial fibrillation, pacemaker therapy, stress management, congestive heart failure, hypertension, diet exercise and heart failure.
