CANCER CARE

Look Good, Feel Better Program
Free program offered by the SMHC Cancer Care Program and the American Cancer Society, designed to lift the spirits of women who are experiencing the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatments.

Macrobiotics Natural Foods Cooking Class
Fourth Saturday of the month (March 22), 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Location: Sweetser, 50 Moody Street, Saco

Macrobiotics is a natural approach to health and sickness. A macrobiotic diet consists of whole foods and cooking techniques brimming with health-giving qualities. CHILDBIRTH EDUCATION

Childbirth Preparation Class (Lamaze)            
Location: SMHC, 1 Medical Center Drive, Biddeford
Cost: $75
This class will cover a variety of birthing information, including: pain control, stages of labor, positions, breathing and much more. Let us help you become more informed so you can create realistic goals and expectations for your most perfect day. Expectant mothers should be in their last trimester.

Breastfeeding Class
March 25, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Location: SMHC, 1 Medical Center Drive, Biddeford
Free
This class, presented by one of SMHC’s board certified lactation consultants, will cover how to breastfeed your baby, what's normal, and where to get help if needed.

Safe Baby - Infant Safety & Infant/Toddler CPR  
This class provides a non-certificate course by the American Heart Association to family and friends, as well as basic home safety for your baby as they grow.

Heartsaver CPR

Total Joint Replacement Education Class
This free educational session is designed for those considering total joint replacement. Participants will learn what to expect before, during and after their procedure and stay in the hospital. Open to anyone interested.

Weight Loss Surgery Information Session
Is weight loss surgery the right decision for you? Have you tried the other weight loss methods and nothing seems to work? If you're considering weight loss surgery, then this free introductory class is for you. Information will be presented about nutrition, resources, and other topics to help with the lifestyle and emotional adjustments you may face. For more information, call 283-7987.

Clinical Trials
Wednesday, March 26, noon to 1:00 p.m.
Location: Cancer Care Center, 27 Industrial Avenue, Sanford

Speaker Patricia Collins, CCRC (Certified Clinical Research Coordinator), certified by the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) Maine Center for Cancer Medicine. Class provides participants with basic clinical trial information. What is a clinical trial? Where do I find information on clinical trials? What should I ask or know before I decide to participate in a clinical trial?

Be Tobacco Free
First Monday of each month, 4 sessions (March 3, 10, 17, 24) 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Location: SMHC’s Cardiopulmonary Wellness Center, 1 Medical Center Drive, Biddeford

A comprehensive 4-week course designed to offer the tobacco user all the information and tools required to become tobacco free. The Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialists will offer insights into smoking habits, stress and the relationship it has to smoking, as well as nicotine replacement options available. On¬going support is also valuable in guiding the tobacco user to become tobacco free. Pre-registration is preferred, please call 283-7988.

Outsmarting Diabetes
March 3, 5, 10, 12 & 17, 10:00 a.m. to noon

Living Well with Pre-Diabetes
Tuesday March 4, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Location: SMHC, 25 June Street, Sanford
Cost: $10
Living Well is designed for individuals who have been diagnosed with one of the following: pre-diabetes, borderline diabetes or metabolic syndrome; and individuals who would like to learn tips and tools for a healthier lifestyle. Participants will learn about the diagnosis of pre-diabetes; discuss ways to reduce the risk of acquiring diabetes; create a meal plan with health, lifestyle, and personal goals in mind; learn what foods affect blood sugar levels; learn how to read food nutrition labels; and develop a place for reasonable weight loss if appropriate. Better Breathers Club (Pulmonary Rehabilitation)
Second Wednesday of each month (March 12), 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Open to anyone interested in learning more about pulmonary disease and improving their quality of life. Small group sessions allow participants to share experiences and learn in a comfortable and caring environment. For more information, please call 283-7773.

Breast Cancer Survivors Support Group

Mom’s Circle Support Group

SMHC’s Birthing Suite hosts a weekly Mom’s Circle, facilitated by Katherine O'Connor, RN, IBCLC. This group allows mothers to meet for support, play dates, friendship and fun! The group provides mothers with the opportunity to share ideas, vent frustration and share their experiences to help other new moms and discuss the normal, and not-so-normal, emotions during their postpartum journey. The will discuss cardiovascular diseases, atrial fibrillation, pacemaker therapy, stress management, congestive heart failure, hypertension, diet exercise and heart failure.

Ostomy Support Group
Wednesday, March 5, 6:00 p.m.
Location: SMHC, 1 Medical Center Drive, Biddeford

The program is for patients, families and caregivers of those having or having had ostomy surgery. Sessions will include discussion with ostomy nurses and visits from recommended vendors. This group is offered in affiliation with the United Ostomy Association.
