Aug 2015 - May 2015
Partners for Healthier Communities (PHC) at Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC), a local Healthy Maine Partnership, and Walmart are kicking off a new indoor walking program in Sanford to encourage people to “walk while they shop.” The program was established to expand access to walking options in the Sanford-Springvale area with support from the Sanford-Springvale YMCA, Let’s Go! York County and SMHC.
The kick-off event includes refreshments, raffles for great prizes (including a membership to the Sanford-Springvale YMCA) and educational materials about how only 30 minutes a day of walking can improve your health.
Getting regular exercise is an important component of good health and walking is one the best ways to stay active. But in the winter months snow and ice can make it difficult to walk safely, especially for the elderly and the very young. The walking program at Walmart gives folks of all ages an indoor place to exercise regularly. The store is especially convenient for seniors and parents with kids in strollers, with plenty of parking and wide aisles. Walkers can track their progress; one loop around the store is equivalent to one quarter of a mile and four loops are equal to one mile.
In addition to PHC and Walmart, the event and walking program is being launched with support from the Sanford-Springvale YMCA, Let’s Go! York County and Southern Maine Health Care.
The event will take place on:
Friday, January 17, 2014 – 7:00 a.m.
1930 Main Street
