Apr 2016 - Jan 2016
At an annual luncheon given in their honor this week, Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) officially thanked their volunteers for contributing more than 58,000 hours in 2013. During the ceremony Wells resident Walter Leffler, who volunteers in the Safety department, was recognized with the prestigious Lauren Shulman Volunteer of the Year award. This nomination-based honor is bestowed on the volunteer who best exemplifies “the volunteer spirit,” with enthusiasm and support for the organization, as well as dependability and contributions of time and energy.
“Congratulations to Walter for receiving this well-deserved recognition,” said SMHC president & CEO Ed McGeachey. “His healthcare engineering background, knowledge of safety in the hospital environment and willingness to conduct safety inspections at any of our campuses make him an invaluable member to the Safety department. We are very fortunate to have many devoted volunteers like Walter who are vital members of the SMHC team.”
Leffler has been a volunteer at SMHC for 17 years, contributing more than 4,000 hours of his time in the Safety department. In 2005, Leffler was named Maine’s Volunteer of the Year. During the annual luncheon, awards were presented to numerous volunteers for years of service and hours gifted. Presidential Award winners and members of the 2014 Maine Honor Roll were also announced.
Men and women from all parts of York County volunteer at SMHC. Whether they help a few hours a week or several days a week, volunteers provide a vital link between the medical centers in Biddeford and Sanford and the people they serve. Some volunteers work in areas where they are in direct contact with patients, others are involved in "behind the scenes" activities which enhance the care provided by the hospital. SMHC volunteers are important members of the organization's healthcare team. The age of SMHC volunteers spans almost an entire century, from teenagers to those in their nineties.
