Jul 2016 - May 2016
Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) is pleased to announce their partnership with the Maine Coast Marathon to be held on Sunday, May 11, 2014. All proceeds from the event will benefit SMHC’s nationally accredited Center for Breast Care, an ACR-designated Breast Center of Excellence providing high quality, compassionate care for breast cancer patients. The race, which begins at 7:30 a.m. from Kennebunk High School, follows a course with breathtaking ocean views through Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Goose Rocks Beach and Fortunes Rocks before finishing at the University of New England (UNE) in Biddeford.
“We are excited about this unique opportunity to raise money for Southern Maine Health Care’s Center for Breast Care,” stated Ed McGeachey, president and CEO of SMHC. “More than 500 runners have already registered and 100 percent of their pledges and any sponsorships received will directly benefit breast cancer survivors in our community.”
Last year, more than six local women per month were diagnosed with breast cancer at SMHC. Diagnosis was the start of their survivorship journey, a journey during which they were supported every step of the way by an experienced breast care team including a specially trained breast care nurse navigator. We would like to invite you to join breast cancer survivors and your community in fighting this disease.
The Maine Coast Marathon is a USARF-certified course and 26 percent of the 2013 finishers qualified for the Boston Marathon. This course has yielded three athletes qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials and produced the fastest marathon time (2:15:13) ever run in Maine. Registration is $85 through March 30, with special rates for 1980s Alumni runners and current UNE students, and $95 from April 1 to May 4.
