Ensuring a healthier future for York County
An exciting new healthcare system has launched in York County! On January 1, Goodall Hospital and Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) completed their merger and became Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC); the fifth largest healthcare system in Maine.
“This merger marks a huge step forward for health care in York County,” said SMHC President and CEO Ed McGeachey. “For nearly two years we have been working toward the launch of Southern Maine Health Care. By bringing together two great organizations, we have created a dynamic new healthcare system; ensuring that we will continue to provide high quality care to our communities for generations to come.
“Health care is extremely complex and is changing rapidly. Hospitals face huge financial challenges today, as payments from Medicare and MaineCare continue to shrink and the amount of free care (care provided for those who cannot afford to pay) and bad debt (care provided for those who do not pay) increases. In fiscal year 2014, payments to SMHC will be lowered by more than $4 million while SMHC will pay $33 million for free care and bad debt,” added McGeachey. “SMHC’s larger scale and membership in MaineHealth enables us to achieve important cost savings so we can continue to provide excellent care, decrease the cost of providing care and sustain critical services.”
“Our name may have changed but our commitment to providing award-winning care with excellence has not,” said Patsy Aprile, SMHC’s COO. “SMHC’s mission is to improve the health and health care of the communities we serve. We will continue to do our very best to provide excellent care, always, from any point in the system.”
