SMMC Announces First Baby of the New Year

01/03/2013

At 4:57 p.m. on January 1, Dr. Claire Danby delivered the first of nearly 600 children that will be born in 2013 at Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC). Melissa Williams and Dylan Simpson of Biddeford welcomed their 7 pound 5 ounce baby girl in the warmth and comfort of SMHC's beautiful Birthing Suite, and Claira Rose Simpson earned the distinction of being SMHC's first baby of the New Year.

Claira Rose and her parents received a spectacular gift basket filled with items donated by SMHC, local businesses and community members.  The basket included: a $100 gift from the SMHC Birthing Suite to add to her scholarship fund; baby's first photos by Kelly Roy Photography; a $50 gift card to Target from SMHC’s Community Relations department; a beautiful pink stuffed teddy bear from the SMHC Ladies Auxiliary gift shop - The Pill Box; a beautiful large gift package from Altrusa Biddeford-Saco; a package of diapers from Similac; a tote bag with books and other great items from Maine Families; a $20 gift certificate from Nonesuch Books in Biddeford; a breastfeeding stool, diaper bag and storage containers from SMHC’s Lactation department; a beautiful knitted set from Shirley Machinski; an Edible Delight Baby Arrangement valued at $55; a full year subscription to the Journal Tribune; diaper cake, clothing, toys, books, a lovely blanket, a spa package for Mom, a silver piggy bank and other miscellaneous items from SMHC’s Birthing Suite.

“Nothing could have made us happier than to ring in the New Year with the birth of our second daughter. We would like to thank the staff for all their help and contributions. The Birthing Suite at SMHC and local businesses have made this a very special new year,” stated Dylan and Melissa.

In addition to the basket, Claira Rose, along with all other Maine resident babies born in 2013, will be eligible to receive a $500 grant through the Harold Alfond College Challenge to start a NextGen College Investing Plan® (NextGen®) account. The Alfond Scholarship Foundation set up the grant program to help ensure access to higher education for all Maine’s children.  All Maine resident babies may receive the grant if they are enrolled in NextGen on or before their first birthday. There is no family income limit or requirement to contribute any of the family’s own money to receive the grant.
