SMMC Auxiliary Donates $45,000 to Room Renovations

12/20/2013

Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) Auxiliary President Patricia Bibber and the Auxiliary Board of Directors recently presented Edward McGeachey, SMHC President and CEO, with a check for $45,000 toward the Auxiliary’s $90,000 in support of the hospital’s transition to private rooms.  In presenting the check, Bibber said “We are honored to be part of this major initiative that will greatly enhance patient comfort and privacy while also furthering quality care in a positive healing environment.”

Earlier this year, SMHC began renovating most of its inpatient rooms to private rooms.  Private rooms help lower the risks of infection as well as protect patient privacy during personal discussions between physicians, nurses, patients and patients’ families.  Private rooms also allow for more relaxed healing without the noise and disturbances that sometimes come with a roommate and their guests. Each room is equipped with a comfortable visiting area and a day bed so loved ones can even stay over, if they wish. There will be no additional charge for a private room and they will be provided as available.  In addition, a mounted lift is being placed in each room to assist caregivers in the movement of patients and, thereby prevent staff injuries.

“This shift to private rooms brings an enormous care benefit to SMHC’s patients, but it involves a significant investment,” stated SMHC president and CEO Ed McGeachey.  “We, and our patients, are so appreciative that the SMHC Auxiliary chose to adopt this initiative as their latest fundraising project.”

The Auxiliary has been an integral part of the SMHC family since 1907, raising over $2,000,000 since 1991. The Auxiliary's main annual fundraising projects include the operation of the hospital’s gift shop, the annual golf tournament each September, and the seasonal Tree of Life holiday solicitation, which this year is supporting a new defibrillator.  Each year, the Auxiliary selects a special project that benefits SMHC and its patients.  This year and next year, the project chosen has been the renovation of semi-private rooms to private rooms for the comfort and healing of patients.

The Auxiliary consists of friends of the hospital including former patients, current employees and retirees, physicians' family members, and neighbors. Auxiliary members live in the communities SMHC serves, and each Auxilian believes in the importance of high quality, compassionate, community health care that provides the latest in diagnostic and treatment technology. The SMHC Auxiliary always welcomes new members. They began as a group of 31 and now boast a membership of nearly 250.

As of January 1, 2014, SMHC will be merging with Goodall Hospial to become Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) and the Auxiliary membership will span most of York County.  If you would like to be involved or learn more about the Auxiliary, please call Melissa Nadeau at 283-7225.
