SMMC Cancer Program Receives Accreditation with Commendation

05/08/2013

Three-year designation is the highest level awarded by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer

Southern Maine Medical Center’s (SMMC) cancer program has once again been awarded a three-year accreditation with commendation, the highest level awarded, by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoSCoC). The designation recognizes that the hospital’s physicians, staff and processes meet stringent criteria set forth by the ACoSCoC. Fewer than 30 percent of all hospitals nationwide receive this accreditation.

“Receiving CoC accreditation with commendation is a hallmark of excellence,” said Oncologist/Hematologist and SMHC Cancer Committee Chair Kurt Ebrahim, DO. “This designation reflects SMHC’s commitment to provide high quality, comprehensive, multidisciplinary patient-centered care; assuring patients that the cancer care they receive through SMHC meets the highest standards.”

Approval by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. To maintain approval, SMHC must undergo an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor every three years. Receiving care at a CoC approved center ensures that patients have access to:

  • Quality, comprehensive care
  • A wide range of advanced technologies and services
  • A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
  • Lifeline patient follow-up through a cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results
  • Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care

SMMC’s cancer program offers a full array of multidisciplinary services including pain management, surgical services, nutritional and laboratory services as well as inpatient palliative care. In addition to the full range of diagnostic and treatment services, SMHC also offers educational programs, screenings and support services for the community.

Established by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) in 1922, the multidisciplinary CoC sets standards for quality multidisciplinary cancer care delivered primarily in hospital settings; surveys hospitals to assess compliance with those standards; collects standardized and quality data from approved hospitals to measure treatment patterns and outcomes; and uses the data to evaluate hospital provider performance and develop effective educational interventions to improve cancer care outcomes at the national and local level.
