SMMC Presents "Share Your Wishes" - an Evening with Ellen Goodman

Discover the greatest gift you can give your family
Do your loved ones know what your wishes are for the rest of your life?  The greatest gift you can give your family is to have the conversation around the table rather than in times of crisis. Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC), with support from Bergen & Parkinson Attorneys, is pleased to present an evening with Ellen Goodman, nationally acclaimed author, columnist, co-founder and director of The Conversation Project.  Goodman will speak about sharing your wishes at the Kennebunk Town Hall Auditorium on Thursday evening, August 8, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. To reserve a seat, please call (207) 283-7234.

With the cooperation of a team of colleagues and professionals, Goodman founded The Conversation Project in 2010.  Nearly everyone has a story involving family members who lost the ability to make or voice decisions for themselves in the final days, months, or years of their lives, including Goodman herself, who has openly shared her own personal experience with end-of-life care concerns she faced with her mother.  Recognizing this, Goodman and her team came up with an initiative dedicated to helping people talk about their wishes for end-of-life-care.  Their goal is to raise awareness on the importance of having the conversation and giving us the tools to do so.

Goodman’s discussion will aim to promote conversation amongst family members on a subject that can be a difficult to broach, yet one that is near and dear to her personally.  Furthermore, it is targeted at a variety of audiences, raising questions such as: What are your wishes for end-of-life care?  Have you ever had the conversation with your loved ones?  She will share her passion for The Conversation Project and how it can change the lives of your loved ones for the better.

Throughout her career, Goodman has been the recipient of several prestigious awards which recognized her excellence and many years of dedication as a Boston Globe columnist. In 1980 Goodman was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Commentary.  Prior to writing for the Globe, Goodman worked as a researcher for Newsweek Magazine, then as a reporter for The Detroit Free Press.  In addition to her career as a columnist and her involvement in The Conversation Project, Goodman has authored seven books.

About The Conversation Project
The Conversation Project is dedicated to helping people talk about their wishes for end-of-life care. It began in 2010, with Ellen Goodman and a group of colleagues and concerned media, clergy, and medical professionals with a vision for a grassroots public campaign spanning both traditional and new media that would change our culture. The goal: to make it easier to initiate conversations about dying, and to encourage people to talk now and as often as necessary so that their wishes are known when the time comes. In order to make this vision a reality, The Conversation Project began its collaboration with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in September of 2011. IHI is a not-for-profit organization that helps lead improvement of health and health care throughout the world. Today, The Conversation Project team includes five seasoned law, journalism, and media professionals who are working pro bono alongside professional staff from IHI who bring a wealth of expertise to the project.
