SMMC’s Mike Sabo Named 2013 Food Service Director of the Year at National Conference

Mike Sabo, director of hospitality services at Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC), was named Food Service Director of the Year for 2013 at the 8th Annual Good to Best Conference held in San Diego, California. This annual meeting of healthcare food service directors, operators, executive chefs, and industry leaders is run by the Good to Best Association and DM&A, the largest, most diverse, full service, healthcare foodservice consulting firm in North America. 

“Food Service Director of the Year is one of the top honors presented annually at the Good to Best Conference to a hospital food service director who exemplifies outstanding catalytic leadership, has a creative and effective management style, implemented notable departmental improvements, and paves the path to success for his or her team,” said DM&A Chief Information Officer Bernard Hernandez. “Recipients are selected through a nomination, review and selection process by the Good to Best Awards Committee. Congratulations to Mike Sabo and Southern Maine Medical Center for this great achievement.”

Sabo is a chef by education and prefers to wear his uniform to show how proud he is of culinary excellence. He manages hospitality services for both SMHC and Goodall Hospital in Sanford and is known as the ultimate team player and a leader always looking to evolve and improve how food service is implemented. In 2012 Sabo received SMHC’s prestigious Employee of the Year award which is presented annually to an employee committed to providing the best possible care to patients and staff. Under Sabo’s leadership, SMHC successfully implemented Room Service in July 2012; giving patients the opportunity to select their meals from a restaurant-style menu whenever they are hungry. Sabo is a member of the Association for Healthcare Foodservice and has contributed to industry trade publications. He serves as chair of MaineHealth’s food service directors group, which is committed to healthier hospitals.
