The Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) Sleep Lab has moved to the Goodall Health Center located at 2 Livewell Drive in Kennebunk, into the suite previously occupied by Goodall Hospital’s Sleep Institute. Beginning on June 11, all sleep studies for Goodall and SMHC patients will be performed at our new location. Chris Hughes, MD, PhD, Robert McArdle, DO and Usha Nalamalapu, MD, FAASM will continue to read studies performed through the SMHC Sleep Lab.
“The Sleep Lab’s highly trained team of specialists will continue to provide patients with the same high quality services at our new location,” said Steve Keegan, VP of Ancillary Services for SMHC. “Combining the resources of the Sleep Lab and Goodall’s Sleep Institute will maximize the efficiency of sleep study operations previously conducted at these separate locations, and allow us to provide all patients with excellence care at state-of-the-art facilities centrally located between the two hospitals.”
One in four Americans do not enjoy the benefits of good sleep because they suffer from sleep disorders. Common sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, insomnia or narcolepsy, affect a person's health and quality of life, including job performance and family relationships.
SMMC’s specialty trained physicians and staff of registered respiratory therapists and polysomnographic technologists offer a full spectrum of care from initial evaluation to sleep study review to diagnosis and long-term management. The Sleep Lab facilities include private bedrooms for sleep studies, supported by state-of-the art sleep equipment.
Patients undergoing a sleep study will spend a night in the Sleep Lab, while brain waves, muscle activity, leg and arm movements, heart rhythms, and other body functions are monitored during sleep. With this information, physicians Chris Hughes, MD, PhD, Robert McArdle, DO and Usha Nalamalapu, MD, FAASM can prescribe a treatment plan that suits the patient's individual needs.
