BIDDEFORD, Maine – August 15, 2013 – Southern Maine Medical Center’s (SMMC) Sleep Lab in Kennebunk has received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). This five-year designation is only awarded to programs that meet or exceed all standards for professional health care by the AASM. These core standards include personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care and quality assurance. Additionally, the sleep center’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.
“One in four Americans do not enjoy the benefits of good sleep due to common sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia or narcolepsy,” said Vice President of Ancillary Services Steve Keegan. “SMMC’s specialty trained physicians and staff, who are registered polysomnographic technologists and credentialed in respiratory care, offer a full spectrum of care from initial evaluation to sleep study review to diagnosis and long-term management. The Sleep Lab facilities include private bedrooms for sleep studies, supported by state-of-the art sleep equipment,” added Keegan.
“The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates Southern Maine Medical Center’s Sleep Lab for fulfilling the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a sleep disorders center,” said Dr. M. Safwan Badr, AASM president. “The SMHC Sleep Lab is a significant resource to the local medical community and provides academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders.”
The SMHC Sleep Lab is directed by Christopher Hughes, MD, PhD, and is located in the Goodall Health Center at 2 Livewell Drive in Kennebunk. Anyone who feels they might benefit from a sleep study should discuss their concerns with their physician.
