Your Hospital Stay

 

At the Hospital: Your Personal Belongings
It is best to send your personal belongings home with a friend or relative. If this cannot be done, arrangements can be made to lock small valuables in the SMHC safe. Contact your nurses for assistance.

If you are a planned admission, you should bring as few personal belongings as possible. SMHC will provide you with a hospitality kit, but you may want to bring your own toiletries, shaving kit or cosmetics, and a robe with slippers. Although we'll provide you with a hospital gown, you may wish to bring along a favorite nightgown or pajamas to make yourself feel more at home.

Important Note: If you take any prescribed medications, you should leave them at home because they could interfere with your treatment at the hospital.

When you come to SMHC, bring a list of medications you normally take and give the list to your nurse. The list should include the name of each medication, its dosage and how frequently it is to be used. Your physician will order the medication for you if it is essential for your care.

What to Leave at Home
SMHC cannot be held responsible for personal loss, so please leave all valuables (i.e. jewelry, credit cards, personal papers, etc.) at home. A minimal amount of money is recommended for personal needs during your stay, but don't bring any more than you absolutely need.

Following hospital regulatory standards, we must insist that you not bring any televisions, hair dryers, radios or other electrical equipment. This is for your safety as well as the safety of your fellow patients.

Also, SMHC cannot assume responsibility for personal loss of eyeglasses, dentures, hearing aids, etc.

Arranging for your discharge
You and your physician should arrange for your release from the hospital before 1 PM. This allows us to clean and prepare the room for the admission of a new patient later that same day. Please be sure to arrange for transportation as much in advance as possible. Before you leave, please double-check to make sure that you have all of your belongings with you. If requested, an escort will take you by wheelchair to the Main Entrance and remain with you until your transportation arrives. If you need a taxi or private ambulance service, your nurse will make the arrangements for you. If friends or relatives are picking you up by car, please ask them to park in the Visitors' Parking Lot until you are ready to leave the hospital. Cars may not be left unattended in front of the Main Entrance, because it is a Fire Lane.

Patient safety and satisfaction are top priorities at SMHC. If you have patient care or safety concern, or a complaint, we want to know. Our goal is to address any concerns or complaints to your complete satisfaction.

If you have a patient care or safety concern, or a complaint, our internal grievance process is as follows:

  • Bring your concern or complaint to the attention of a staff member, so it may be addressed as soon as possible.
  • If the staff member is unable to assist you to your satisfaction, ask to speak to the person in charge.
  • If the person in charge is unable to assist you to your satisfaction, you can also contact any of these departments:

If you feel that your patient care or safety concern, or your complaint, cannot be resolved through the internal grievance process, you may contact the Joint Commission's Office of Quality Monitoring to register your complaint. This can be done either by calling at 1-800-994-6610 or by e-mail at complaint@jointcommission.org.
